Married Couple’s Allowance and how to claim

Top Tip
If you and your partner were born on or after 6 April 1935, you may be able to claim Marriage Allowance instead.

Overview
As an alternative to Marriage Allowance, you may wish to consider applying for Married Couple’s Allowance.

Married Couple’s Allowance is more generous than Marriage Allowance, however you will only be able to consider applying for Married Couple’s Allowance if at least one of the partners was born prior to 6 April 1935.

For marriages which have been in place since prior to 5 December 2005, the husband’s income is used to determine the amount of Married Couple’s Allowance that can be claimed (although it can be transferred to the wife).

For marriages and civil partnerships which took place after 5 December 2005, it is the income of the highest earner.

Tax relief under Married Couple’s Allowance is applied at the rate of 10%.

To apply for Married Couple’s Allowance, or if you wish to obtain any advice or guidance in relation to claiming Married Couple’s Allowance, please contact HM Revenue & Customs. HMRC can be contacted on 0300 200 3300.
